Background of the Region
Swat is a region of immense historical, cultural, and natural significance, with a legacy that includes the Gandhara Civilization, ancient trade, and the spread of Islam. Its picturesque landscapes, abundant resources, and strategic location have nurtured civilizations but also attracted invaders and settlers over centuries. Despite its glorious past, modern challenges such as governance issues, environmental degradation, and socio-economic disparities have strained its physical and cultural fabric. The establishment of grassroots organizations like the Environmental Protection Society (EPS) reflects the community's recognition of these issues and their resolve to address them. For Swat to thrive in the future, sustainable management of its resources, better governance, and the preservation of its rich heritage are imperative.EPS’s vision statement clearly and aptly caters the province’s most pressing development needs as Pakistan is currently facing the challenges of terrorism, poverty and imbalance in society. The vision statement correctly recognizes areas where Pakistani social condition lags behind the most and positions EPS to work towards challenging and changing the status quo.
As an eminent NGO of KP, EPS is placed in the ideal position to play a strategic role at this critical point for KP and in particular Malakand Division in assisting it to achieve peace, facilitating communities in development process, contributing to the provincial level to meet development targets. By aligning its vision statement with the current national development context, EPS takes ownership of this unique position to contribute in to areas’ evolution.
